Federal Foreign Buyer Ban
Starting January 1st 2023 the Federal Foreign Buyer Ban will now be implemented.
- The foreign buyer ban period will last two years.
- The ban will only apply to residential property.
- Exceptions Include: A temporary resident within the meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; or A non-Canadian who buys residential property with a Canadian spouse or common-law partner if the spouse or common-law partner is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or person registered as an Indian under the Indian Act.
Whistler, a ski resort town in British Columbia's Sea to Sky Corridor, is not included in the Metro Vancouver or Fraser Valley districts and hence is not subject to the foreign buyers tax. Foreign nationals may, however, be subject to additional taxes and regulations when purchasing property in Whistler or elsewhere in British Columbia.
